Will you snail-mail physical copies or email pdfs to schools and/or potential firms as a part of your resume? It all depends on who and how you envision spreading your portfolio around. I actually just landed a job working for a firm with absolutely no printed portfolio. Try sites like September Industry for good ideas about print layout. & always be mindful of proportion of type & the way you logically would read a page. Try bleeding images as well if you want to be creative. Focus intently on good typography & layout. The best advice I can give is to lay back on frivolous, trendy & ultimately tacky designs/arbitrary shapes & colours & just let your design speak for itself. I've also seen some examples of designers who have printed HUGE newsprint (A1/A2?) sheets & folded them into something A5 size. Maybe print A4/8.5x11 but design in landscape 11x17 so that your page can bleed across the border & create a book? That'd be interesting. I'd much rather look/hold something A4/8.5x11. I've got a background in design & have always been told printed portfolios are best suited in 11x17 or A3 format so that you can print large spreads.
